Nota Bene Mac users who update to macOS Tahoe 26.5 may occasionally see a notification message that says “Support Ending for Intel-based Apps”.
The short answer is there is nothing to worry about. The current version of Nota Bene will continue to run on macOS Tahoe and the next major version of macOS (macOS 27) without any modifications.
It is highly promising that there will be a version of Nota Bene ready on or before support for Intel-based apps completely ends on macOS that will take full advantage of Apple Silicon Macs.We will continue to provide customers with updates as we receive new information.
There are three different types of apps that commonly run on the latest Apple Silicon Macs: apps that are optimized for Apple Silicon Macs, Universal 2 apps (apps that are optimized for both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs), and Intel apps (apps that are optimized for Intel Macs but have not been optimized for Apple Silicon Macs yet).
Nota Bene for Mac currently uses a technology called CrossOver that allows Nota Bene to bring the full functionality of the Windows version of Nota Bene to Mac users, allowing both Windows and Mac users to have feature parity between both platforms.
The current version of CrossOver is an Intel Mac-optimized app, so it has not yet been optimized for Apple Silicon Macs. However, all current versions of macOS on Apple Silicon Macs include a technology called Rosetta 2 that allows Intel-optimized apps to run on Apple Silicon Macs without any modifications, and many times the Intel-optimized apps run faster and better on Apple Silicon Macs than they do on Intel Macs! This has allowed Nota Bene to run on Apple Silicon Macs since the first M1 Macs shipped without any major modifications, and feedback has been exceptional so far.
Eventually, Apple will begin phasing out some support for Rosetta 2 after macOS 27, although the extent of Apple’s phasing out such support is not fully known yet (Apple has stated there will be limited support for Rosetta 2 after macOS 27 for games, etc., and Nota Bene uses far fewer resources than games). However, we have been actively discussing the situation with CrossOver, and the team at CrossOver has been hard at work preparing a version of CrossOver that is fully optimized for Apple Silicon Macs and that no longer relies on Rosetta 2. Due to the technical nature of CrossOver, this project has taken the CrossOver team a while to work on. The team is highly confident that they will have a version of CrossOver that is fully optimized for Apple Silicon Macs and that does not rely on Rosetta 2 on or before Apple fully ends support for Rosetta 2. We are continuing ongoing discussions with CrossOver on this front, plus we will thoroughly test Nota Bene on the new versions of CrossOver as soon as the new versions are available for testing.
Thank you again for being a part of the Nota Bene user community. We are working overtime with CrossOver to provide our Mac users with the absolute highest-quality long-term experience, as some of our own team members are full-time Mac users who enjoy using Nota Bene on their Macs.
